Edgbaston unveils new plaza to add large outdoor community space
Edgbaston cricket stadium has unveiled a new plaza and stadium entrance, creating one of the largest outdoor community spaces in Birmingham.
Covering an area of 14,800sq m, the Edgbaston Plaza forms the first phase of the new Edgbaston Stadium Masterplan. The development has seen the previous brick walls along Edgbaston Road – and the building within the former car park – demolished to open up access and views to the stadium.
The Plaza has been unveiled ahead of a busy summer for Edgbaston, which will see it host England’s men’s cricket team’s Test match and T20 international versus India and the Vitality Blast Finals Day. The venue will also host the T20 cricket competitions of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Craig Flindall, Chief Operating Officer at Edgbaston, said: “When we started the Edgbaston Stadium Masterplan, we had a clear focus on ensuring that the new Plaza would be the first stage to complete in order to bring forward the benefits for our community as soon as possible.
“Now that it’s part of the stadium footprint, we want to make the Plaza one of the beating hearts of Edgbaston. Alongside improving the experience for spectators attending our many high-profile cricket fixtures, we want the space to host cultural festivals and events that bring people together from across the city and local community.”
